Caringbah Leisure Centre

A visit to the 'Casbah' in the Shire (got my passport stamped) to swim here. A great welcome from the locals in this suburban pool.

About the pool

Background

Original inhabitants of this land were the Dharawal people.

This pool was opened in 1968 by dual Olympic medallist Michael Wenden who was the first ‘official’ swimmer. After opening this pool became the home of Cronulla Swim Club who moved from swimming in Gunnamatta Bay, much relieved from swimming with low tides, jelly blubbers and pollution after heavy rain.

Olympic hero Ian Thorpe also trained here (with many other pools) during his prelude to his swimming comeback in 2011.
